No blood diamonds. Ever.
The natural diamond trade is one of the great moral failures of modern commerce. "Conflict-free" certification (the Kimberley Process) was a meaningful step when it was drafted — but it covers only a narrow definition of conflict and is widely understood to be inadequate by its own architects.
Mettle will not pretend otherwise. We will not stock natural diamonds.
What we use instead
Solid .925 sterling silver
Every piece is solid sterling — no plating, no hollow tricks, no "silver-tone" alloys. We assay each batch in-house and stamp our pieces .925. What you pay for is the metal itself, at full honest weight.
Lab-grown stones (coming with rings)
When we launch rings, the only stones we will sell are lab-grown — diamonds and gemstones alike. They are chemically and optically identical to mined stones. They cost a fraction of the price. They do not require anyone’s labor in an unsafe mine. The ethical math is not complicated.
Packaging
Plastic-free paper. Soy-based inks. A cloth pouch you can reuse. We pay slightly more for this and we’re fine with that.
What we won’t do
- Buy "ethically sourced" natural diamonds from vendors who can’t prove the mine of origin.
- Use "silver-plated" or "gold-filled" shortcuts and call them real metal.
- Greenwash. If we get something wrong, we’ll say so here and fix it.
Keeping us honest
We’ll publish an annual sourcing report with named suppliers, audit results, and any failures. First report: one year after launch.
If you know something we don’t about any of our materials, tell us at hello@shopmettle.com. We’d rather hear it from you than find out later.
